String Instrument Petting Zoo with Ruth Banwell

String Instrument Petting Zoo with Ruth Banwell

At the String Instrument Petting Zoo , students including adults who are interested can hear the violin, viola and cello instruments, hold the instruments and experiment with making a sound on them.  Just holding a string instrument answers questions for some students. How big is it? How heavy is it? Where do your hands go when you play it?  We stress, though, that making a sound isn’t as important as wanting to make that instrument’s sound.

Once you’ve had a String Instrument Petting Zoo experience, you can learn more about private Suzuki string lessons or an Adult Beginning Orchestra class.

Meet the teacher, Mrs. Banwell!  Mrs. Banwell has many years of experience teaching violin, viola and cello. She has taught Suzuki string private lessons and taught string orchestra for 18 years with the Janesville Public Schools.  She has performed in the Rockford Symphony Orchestra and the Turtle Creek Chamber Orchestra. She graduated from Augustana College, Rock Island Illinois with a BME and attended Stevens Point University and is a certified Suzuki teacher through book 6.

This event is free, but we would appreciate knowing how many people to accommodate for, so please follow the link below to RSVP:

The Orchestra Strings

Violin, viola, and cello are usually offered in different sizes so player size is usually not an issue as long as the proper size is in the hands of the students.

VIOLIN

The VIOLIN is the best known string instrument. It plays most of the melody. It gets to play high, fast music very often.

VIOLA

The VIOLA is like he violin but plays lower notes, often adding important background parts.

CELLO

The Cello plays a little bit of everything in orchestra. Because it can play both very low and very high, it gets to play melody, fast “Flashy” parts, background and loud, low parts.

Adult String Orchestra Class with Ruth Banwell

This class covers the basics of playing on a string instrument (violin, viola or cello). The class progresses through the book “Essential Elements For Strings” Book 1 and culminates in learning a few simple songs as a group. You will learn the fundamentals of performing and build your performance from there. You do not need to have any previous music experience.

This class will meet once a week starting Thursday, September 14th.

It is important to attend all classes and to practice each lesson outside of class.  It takes at least one year to learn the basics of this instrument and up to 4 years to learn all the techniques to apply to a wide range of string literature.
