Violins! How to choose the right size?

Violins come in a range of sizes different sizes AND are built differently to suit different ranges of players. So how do you choose and why is it important?

Sizing matters. There are 8 (yes 8!) main sizes of violins. The size of the violin corresponds with the length of the violin body. Choosing the right size violin is based on the size of the violinist. Keep in mind, if the instrument is uncomfortable to play, it will quite possibly just collect dust.

What is the difference between a beginner violin and a step-up?

A ‘beginner’ (student) violin doesn’t necessarily equal low quality as all violins are made differently. However, a ‘step up’ violin uses higher quality materials that allow you to play with a richer, fuller sound. When it comes to playing at an advanced level, a violin is considered an investment.

So how do I know which violin is the ‘correct’ one?

Come in! Our experienced team will measure the player to find the right fit and help you choose the right violin based on playing ability and style.
