Woodwinds

Despite their name, most woodwinds are no longer made of ‘just’ wood. Today’s woodwinds are made of wood, plastic, metal, or a combination of. Woodwinds produce sound by blowing air into a mouthpiece. Most, but not all, woodwinds require the use of a reed to play. The flute and piccolo do not require a reed.

The Woodwind family includes:

  • Flute

  • Clarinet

  • Bass Clarinet

  • Piccolo

  • Alto Saxophone
