Strings
String instruments produce sound when the strings are vibrated by plucking, bowing, or striking. In an orchestra, these instruments include:
Violin
Viola
Cello
Double (upright) Bass
Harp
However, there are other instruments that produce sound when ‘plucked’ or ‘striked’. These include:
Guitar
Ukulele
Banjo
Mandolin
Dulcimer
Piano (yes, string AND percussion!)
How to choose the right size of violin?
Violins come in a range of sizes different sizes AND are built differently to suit different ranges of players. So how do you choose and why is it important?
Sizing matters. There are 8 (yes 8!) main sizes of violins. The size of the violin corresponds with the length of the violin body. Choosing the right size violin is based on the size of the violinist. Keep in mind, if the instrument is uncomfortable to play, it may just end up collecting dust.
What is the difference between a beginner violin and a step-up?
A ‘beginner’ (student) violin doesn’t necessarily equal low quality as all violins are made differently. However, a ‘step up’ violin uses higher quality materials that allow you to play with a richer, fuller sound. When it comes to playing at an advanced level, a violin is considered an investment.
